April 2024 - Community Safety Meeting Recap

On April 4th, members of the YMHRA board of directors attended a community safety meeting held at Armour Heights Presbyterian Church.
Karen Stintz, former city Councillor, introduced Toronto Police Services personnel from 32 Division: Superintendent Belanger, Police Constable Chennelle Matheson, and Staff Sargent Cosgrove. Chennelle Matheson provided recent crime statistics for our neighborhood, safety tips, and recommendations. A copy of her presentation is available here.

Stephanie Smyth wrote a follow up article calling for:
-
Increased police patrols in areas vulnerable to vehicle theft;
-
Tougher bail conditions for those involved in organized auto theft rings;
-
Stiffer sentences for those convicted of auto theft; and
-
More aggressive border patrols.
Karen Stintz made comments at the close of the meeting noting that “it became clear during the discussion that all levels of government can do more to protect communities.”

Jul 2023 - New no stopping areas

In June 2023, the North York Community Council approved a small section of Mason to be designated as no stopping areas during 8am-10am and 2pm-4pm. These are currently signed as no parking, which parking enforcement officers will not ticket if someone is present in the car. Accordingly, a "no stopping" designation is stricter as vehicles are stopped will be ticketed regardless of someone in the car (and the fine is higher). We expect the new signage and enforcement to be in place by September 2023. Refer to the council meeting minutes for further details.

Jun 2023 - Loretto Abbey Traffic Concerns

At our 2023 annual general meeting and through your correspondence we heard about the disruptiveness of the traffic at Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary School.

After numerous discussions between members of YMHRA’s board of directors, Loretto Abbey’s administration and staff, and members of the Toronto Catholic School Board (TCSB), the following actions will be implemented to help improve the traffic:
-
School assemblies to educate the staff and students about the expectations for drop-offs and pick-ups.
-
Weekly newsletter by Principal Adams to parents with expectations for drop-offs and pick-ups, and where possible, distribute hard copies of the newsletters to parents. Parents will be asked to use the smaller parking lot on the infirmary side.
-
More visibility of the administration team during drop-off and pick-up time.
-
Increased patrol by the Toronto Police Service’s Parking Enforcement Unit.
-
Principal Adams and Loretto Abbey’s parent council will look into writing a letter to the City asking for increased support in monitoring traffic.
-
Continued consideration, during capital renovations, to design elements that can help improve the flow of traffic on the school’s property.
