Dear Olivia Chow, Shelley Carroll, and Mike Colle

Toronto’s high cost of living is forcing many families to scale back spending on food, transportation, and other basic necessities.  Further to the 9.5% property tax we received in 2024, the proposed 2025 property tax increase of ~7% places further economic pressure on families, and compounds hardship on many seniors in this neighbourhood who live on a fixed income.

We appreciate the need for social programs and supports for Toronto citizens, but expect city council to exercise spending restraint and focus on key priorities like affordable housing, public safety, and efficient public transportation.  Expenditures on non-essential and special interest initiatives such as renaming public spaces and additional bike lanes should be deferred until the city’s fiscal position is stronger.

Toronto taxpayers should also not have to bear a disproportionate share of new immigrant shelter and housing costs that result from federal government immigration policy.  Ottawa should be held accountable and provide funding for this program.

Sincerely,
